Can we talk about AI?

A virtual town hall on how Hudson wants a say in AI and technological change — starting with something concrete: a private license-plate camera found on Warren Street, and Columbia County's disputed 2025 Flock purchase.

How it works

  1. Read the briefing. It's short, and it lays out the strongest case on each side. Jump to the briefing ↓
  2. Vote. Go to Pol.is and vote agree, disagree, or pass on statements your neighbors wrote.
  3. Write your own. Add statements for others to vote on.

Why start with a briefing?

So we're all talking about the same thing. Everyone gets the same facts and the best version of each argument before anyone votes.

How was the briefing developed?

We started from public reporting — Caitie Hilverman's reporting on the Warren Street camera and the county's Flock purchase, plus public statements from Mayor Ferris and county officials — and wrote the strongest good-faith case on each side of the two real disagreements, not just the facts. It's still a draft: real balance means people who actually disagree with each other have reviewed it and agree it's fair, and that review hasn't happened yet. We'll update this once it has.

What makes a good statement?

Works
"Hudson should require Council approval before any license-plate camera is installed."
Doesn't
"Only reckless officials would let this happen without a vote."

What's confirmed

Still unresolved

Where you're likely to genuinely disagree

Should Hudson have any ALPR system at all?

For
It can help recover stolen cars and speed Amber/Silver Alert response, and county cameras already read Hudson plates nearby regardless of what the city decides.
Against
It collects data on every driver, not just suspects; the misuse and false-positive record above is real; once installed, capability tends to expand without a new public conversation.

Is Axon meaningfully safer than Flock?

For
The most serious documented harms trace specifically to Flock's national-sharing feature — a system that stays local, under an accountable local department, is a different risk.
Against
That claim is the Mayor's characterization, not independently audited; Axon still logs every vehicle regardless of suspicion; without any local policy, safety depends on the vendor's word, not an enforceable rule.
